A magnetic hydraulic cylinder, also known as a magnetically actuated hydraulic cylinder or a magnetostrictive hydraulic cylinder, is a type of hydraulic actuator that incorporates magnetism into its design to provide precise and accurate position feedback. These cylinders are commonly used in applications where precise control of cylinder position and velocity is essential. Like a standard hydraulic cylinder, a magnetic hydraulic cylinder consists of a piston and rod assembly within a cylindrical housing. When hydraulic pressure is applied, it moves the piston and rod to perform mechanical work. The key feature of a magnetic hydraulic cylinder is the magnetostrictive sensor, which is embedded within the cylinder's piston or rod. This sensor generates a magnetic field when an electrical current is applied to it. A position marker, typically a small magnet, is affixed to the outside surface of the piston or rod. This marker moves along with the piston or rod as hydraulic pressure is applied. When the magnetostrictive sensor generates a magnetic field, it interacts with the position marker magnet. This interaction causes a change in the sensor's properties due to the magnetostrictive effect (the property of certain materials to change shape in response to a magnetic field). The magnetic hydraulic cylinder operates on the time-of-flight principle. An electrical pulse is sent down the sensor to create the magnetic field. The time it takes for the magnetic field to reach the position marker and return is measured. This time delay is directly proportional to the position of the piston or rod within the cylinder By precisely measuring the time delay and knowing the speed of the magnetic field's propagation, the system can accurately determine the position of the piston or rod within the cylinder. This position feedback is used for control and monitoring purposes.

Magnetic hydraulic cylinders are known for their high precision and accuracy in position sensing. They can provide precise position feedback with resolutions down to micrometers, making them suitable for applications that require fine control. One of the significant advantages of magnetic hydraulic cylinders is that the position sensing is non-contact. This means there is no physical contact or wear between the sensor and the position marker, resulting in longer life and reliability. Magnetic cylinders help control the position and movement of molds in injection molding machines, ensuring precise and consistent part production. They are used in CNC machine tools for precise control of tool position and cutting operations. Magnetic hydraulic cylinders find use in various industrial automation systems, including pick-and-place robots and material handling equipment. They are used in aerospace applications for control surface positioning and flight control systems. Magnetic cylinders help control the movement of packaging equipment, ensuring accurate packaging and sealing. Magnetic cylinders are used in steel mills for the precise positioning of heavy equipment and machinery. They are used in laboratory and scientific instruments that require precise positioning and control.
